Valentine's Day DIY: Miniature Chocolate Truffles!

/ Tuesday, January 22, 2013

How cute would it be to gift a box of homemade mini chocolate truffles to your special someone on Valentine's Day? Maybe it's just me but I find regular truffles to be a tad overwhelming—they're so rich, all you really need is a little bite! I decided to play with the idea of miniature truffles this weekend and it was such a success. It only takes a few minutes to whip these up and I'll show you how to customize them to your lover's taste using mix-ins and coatings. Bonus: My super-simple truffle recipe is made entirely in the microwave—no stovetop-stirring required! (Note: An earring box—seen above—is the perfect size for these little guys!)

MINIATURE CHOCOLATE TRUFFLES MAKES: 4 small boxes
3 ounces chopped semisweet, dark or milk chocolate
3 tablespoons heavy cream
1/4 teaspoon extract or booze of your choice*
Pinch of salt
Cocoa powder, finely chopped nuts, crushed cookies, etc for coating*

1. Microwave the chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl on high in 30 second intervals, stirring, until melted, 1 to 2 minutes. Set aside.
2. Microwave the heavy cream in another microwave-safe bowl until boiling, about 1 minute. Stir in the extract or booze of your choice (pick something your special-someone will love!) and the salt.
3. Add the hot milk to the melted chocolate and stir until combined. Chill until set, 30 to 45 minutes.
4. Roll the chocolate mixture into small truffles between the palms of your hands. Roll in the topping of your choice.

*Here are some flavoring-coating combination suggestions, if you’re interested:
  • almond extract + crushed amaretti cookies
  • bourbon + finely chopped toasted pecans
  • vanilla extract + crushed Oreo cookies
  • coconut extract + toasted coconut
  • chambord + dark chocolate shavings
  • coffee-liqueur + cocoa powder
