/ Tuesday, November 20, 2012

If you're looking for easy and inexpensive DIY Thanksgiving decorations, the grocery store is a great place to start. These gourd votive candles are a quick way to dress up your Thanksgiving table. Master the basic technique and you can turn loads more produce into homemade votives, like apples, pears, oranges, lemons, even artichokes! Here's how...

DIY SQUASH VOTIVE CANDLES

Tea candles
Small gourds
Pairing knife
Small spoon

1. Hold the tea candle approximately where you'd like it to sit in your gourd; trace the outline with a pencil or skewer (you want a gourd that's pretty flat on top). Trim the bottom so it lies flat, if needed.
2. Following the line you traced, cut out a circle about 1-inch deep; use the tip of the knife to flick out the round. Use a small spoon to scoop out the pulp and the seeds inside; discard. Press the tea candle into the hole to secure. Light and use for about 5 days.
